Farms & Fields is an annual juried exhibition that celebrates the variety and importance of agriculture in the Central Valley. Typically, the exhibition is scheduled to coincide with the Stanislaus County Fair, but like most things this summer, plans have changed. Due to continued public health restrictions on business operations, plans for displaying the 46 selected works have shifted the show here – in our Virtual Exhibition Gallery instead of on the walls of our physical galleries.

Orchards, fields, crops, livestock, people, canals, buildings, machinery—as a theme, agriculture includes a wide variety of imagery. Artists from throughout northern and central California were invited to submit work influenced or inspired by any aspect of Central Valley agriculture. The pieces in the exhibition were selected by Lisa McDermott, the Carnegie’s Director & Curator, and Turlock artist John Karl Claes. Included are works in painting, drawing, pastel, photography, mixed media and more.

The exhibition has been organized by theme and subject matter, rather than by artist or medium. This is more akin to how the works would have been installed in the gallery, reflecting the curatorial concept for the show. We’ve divided the works into a few general categories: Animals & Livestock, Buildings & Machinery, Crops & Produce, Orchards & Fields, Landscape Vistas, People, Water & Irrigation, and Abstractions (inspired by agriculture). No division is perfect, and several of the works could easily fit into more than one subject category. We hope you will look through the entire show and enjoy the diverse representations provided by our talented regional artists.

Where possible, we have included the artist’s website so you can see more of their work or contact them directly; click on their name in the list below to be directed to their individual website. If you are interested in purchasing works (prices are included), please click on the INQUIRE button below to send us an email; we will answer any questions and take it from there!
