This handsome home is located on one of California’s designated “Beautiful Streets.”  It was built in the 1970’s and was later sold. The second homeowner did a major remodel, taking the house down to the studs. The current owners have updated the home’s three bathrooms, kitchen, and backyard. Lee Harris did the landscape design.

This is one of two homes on the tour that belongs to an artist. Kelly Viss is recognized for her distinct style that incorporates texture and vivid colors in abstract landscapes.  Viss’s artwork, both paintings and sculpture, is sold across the country and in Europe.

The home has an eclectic charm. “I like the lines of furniture from different eras and moments. I like to use color, never in overabundance,” the artist expresses. “When I see homes by Billy Cotton and Tom Scheerer, I swoon,” she adds. The artist loves fresh and warm environments, with elements that are both humble and playful.

The entire home is a light-filled gallery for art and sculpture. The work of several other artists is displayed alongside that of the homeowner. It appears the couple’s daughter has an eye for art and design as well, as can be seen in her colorful and expressive bedroom.

THE ART OF DESIGN —

With her delicate layering, Viss presents, in both the landscapes and still-lifes, a world as complex as nature while, simultaneously, meditative and satisfying in effect. The works demonstrate a command of light, perspective, and shadows, which implies maturity well beyond her years. — Marion Zola
